Former head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Auvust Hanning, who was detained on suspicion of espionage, used classified documents in preparing a report for Azerbaijan’s intelligence. This is reported by Der Spiegel with reference to the materials of the investigation.
The publication confirmed that August Hanning received the necessary information through a BND informant. Together with Mr. Hanning, a former high-ranking intelligence officer, Manfred D, was detained.
The investigation has not yet established whether the representative of the Azerbaijani intelligence received the documents prepared for him. According to Der Spiegel, August Hanning’s ties with Azerbaijan were not hidden. After leaving the BND, he served on the board of the German-Azerbaijani Forum.
Azerbaijan’s Media and Broadcasting Council later denied any connection to the case of August Hanning. The Agency called the “distribution of such materials without reference to an official source” information manipulation.
August Hanning and his alleged accomplice were detained the day before. The first is in the case of treason and espionage, the second is about aiding attempted treason and espionage. The investigation against Mr. Hanning began in 2025, when his home was raided in the case of the abduction of the children of businesswoman Christina Block. Then a leak was discovered in the BND.
