Russia’s ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, said Moscow would respond immediately if Ottawa tried to seize Russian assets. The diplomat stressed the illegality of such actions.
According to Mr. Stepanov, now in Canada is considering bill S-214 on sovereign assets, which may 26 passed the Senate and passed for consideration in the House of Commons. At the same time, the C-219 initiative, which provides for the disposal of assets of sanctioned individuals and entities, including the possibility of transferring them to the state, is being discussed.
It’s hard to say what the authors mean by “Russian assets” and where in Canada they want to look. In any case, the Russian position regarding such attacks on property - in Canada or elsewhere - is known, the ambassador said in an interview with Izvestia.
The diplomat also recalled the situation with the An-124-100 transport aircraft of Volga-Dnepr Airlines, which has been at Toronto airport since 2022. The plane was stuck there after the closure of Canadian airspace to Russian airlines. Russia insists on its return to the owner and reserves the right to take retaliatory measures in case of confiscation of the aircraft, said Oleg Stepanov.
