French MPs have called for a ban on the sale of energy drinks to people under 16 and the removal of energy from vending machines. The lawmakers outlined their proposals in a report submitted to the parliamentary committee on social issues.
In it, MPs noted that although energy in “reasonable amounts” do not pose a threat to the health of the population as a whole, they are extremely popular with young people who consume such drinks “excessively”. This threatens cardiovascular and psychological problems. It is also known that they are often combined with alcohol. The recommendations of the deputies will be taken into account when amending the bill on the social security budget for 2027.
In France, the sale of energy drinks is not limited by age. In the European Union, there is no single law prohibiting the sale of energy to minors, only the rule of labeling high caffeine content applies.
In July, the sale of energy products to people under 16 was banned in the UK.
