It is assumed that the tax will be charged by airlines or their agents at the same time as the payment of the ticket. Among the proposed exceptions are members of the royal family, the patriarch, heads of foreign states, government officials and children under two.
There is no charge for departure by land and sea. Public discussion of the initiative will take place until October 29. If the law is passed, it will come into force 180 days after publication.
According to the Ministry of Finance of Thailand, the fee will contribute to the development of domestic tourism and keep money in the economy of Thailand. The Association of Thai Travel Agents criticized the initiative. Other initiatives under consideration include the introduction of an increased fee for foreign tourists of 450 baht (about $13.5). The measure should be adopted in 2027.
