According to diplomatic sources, Azerbaijan protested to the chancellor’s office and the Foreign Ministry.
The Azerbaijan Media and Broadcasting Council also called the publication disinformation and part of a smear campaign.
August Hanning, who headed the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany from 1998 to 2005, was detained on October 6. German prosecutors suspect him of espionage and treason. According to investigators, in 2010 he agreed to purchase intelligence information for transfer to third parties. Among the 2,000 documents was classified information. According to Der Spiegel, citing the materials of the investigation, some of the information could be intended for Azerbaijani intelligence.
