In France, police arrested six people suspected of involvement in the theft of paintings from the Renoir Museum in Caignes-sur-Mer a month ago. This was reported by Nice-Matin and BFMTV, citing sources. Among those arrested are two alleged robbers who broke into the museum and stole paintings. The arrests took place in the departments of the Alps-Maritimes, where Caignes-sur-Mer is located, as well as Aero, Jura and Doo.
The Renoir Museum was robbed on September 8. Two masked men entered the museum early in the morning, breaking the glass of the front door and cutting off metal mounts with an electric saw. They brought out four paintings. Two of them were abandoned in the garden, fleeing the police, but two more - "Woman at the Well" and "Portrait of Madame Column Romano" - took with them. The total value of the two stolen paintings is estimated at more than €4 million.
Over the past year, museums around the world have been increasingly looted. In August, Europol published a report. The department said that the recent robberies of museums have become more violent.
