Many men underestimate the importance of the right coat, considering it just outerwear. However, it can radically change the image and add elegance. Expert on men's style Alexander Kapustin told what details to pay attention to when choosing why length is crucial and what to wear this item of wardrobe.

Length is the main criterion
The first thing to consider is that the coat should be long. It's a must. It's like a wide lapel, like a big shirt collar, like a high waist of trousers. A long coat is much better, emphasizes Alexander Kapustin. I have an average height of 176 cm, but even with this height, a long coat looks great. If you are a man tall, 180-185 cm or taller, a long coat is a must. If your height is 165-170 cm, the coat may be a little long, but it can be shortened by at least 15 centimeters. This plus long coats - they can be shortened, and the short can not be lengthened.
Lace and details are more important than fabric
- You may ask why I'm talking about length and lapel rather than fabric and fit. Because these details are more important and easier to define. The difference between good and bad fabric is not noticeable at first glance, especially when you look at a website. But when you pay attention to the length, the wide lapel, the Milan loop, you are more likely to choose a high-quality item with a good fit.
Single-breasted
- There are several coat options: single-breasted and double-breasted. Between them there is no sign “more” or “less”, you choose to your taste, – said Alexander Kapustin. As for materials, of course, pay attention to natural fabrics: wool, cashmere, alpaca, vicuña, if the budget allows. But let me remind you, vicuña is a very expensive material.
Construction
- The design of the coat, as in jackets, is glue, half-canvas and full-canvas. We choose half-canvas because it is the middle ground. This thing sits in the shoulders and chest, and everything below it just hangs, so it's not as critical. The overpayment for full-canvas will be large, and the difference in quality is minimal. We are for rational consumption, the stylist notes.

Reglan
Reglan is the least formal but classic coat. Can I wear it with a suit? Yes, but most of all it fits a combination of individual trousers, shirt, knitted tie, cardigan or jacket. In autumn and winter, I like to wear jackets, turtlenecks and pants, and this coat is ideal for such images, says Alexander Kapustin. Reglan has a free cut, lack of shoulder seam.
Landing
- The coat should sit like a jacket. The sleeve is slightly longer than the jacket, literally 2 cm, and not as often sold when you see 4 cm fingers. On the shoulders everything should be smooth, without creases and bumps. The back should also lie perfectly, because the coat is made of dense fabrics and should sit slightly better than the jacket. Be sure to try on a coat with a tight cardigan or jacket if you wear it. The fist should crawl through the waist, advises Alexander Kapustin.
Pockets and pouches
- Pockets are different. Carved pocket is the most optimal: it is convenient, you can stick your hands. The rectangulars aren't so comfortable. Buttons can be workers. It should be long so that it is comfortable to get into the car. These splints can be unbuttoned so that the coat does not crumple, the stylist explains.
Headgear and accessories
You can wear a hat with a coat, but I don’t think you should. If it's cold, wear a jacket. A hat is appropriate with a jacket. No coat. Tweed caps are Peaky Blinders cosplay. If you are a colorful man 40-50 years old, it may look good, but for 25-35 years – it is not worth it. Hats could be. Suede gloves are preferable to leather, because the transition from textured fabric to smooth skin is too sharp, harmony is lost, the expert notes.
Colour
- What color should a coat wear? Sure, beige. A camel coat is a statement. Dark blue, burgundy, green, brown are also great. Beige coat with any costume, in any way looks incredible. If you want practical, choose dark blue, dark gray. If interesting - dark maroon, green, brown. Light gray, beige and white - for the bravest. Courage is rewarded, says Alexander Kapustin.
What to wear
- We don't wear sports clothes with coats. If you only have a budget for one coat or are just starting out, opt for reglan. If you go to work with a strict dress code - single-breasted or double-breasted dark blue coat. For everyday combinations, color is conditioned by your wardrobe. If you have cold colors – dark blue or gray. If the earth shades are brown, beige, green. In a good way, you should have several coats: less formal and more formal, sums up Alexander Kapustin.
