MEPs demand EU ban on breeding and killing animals for fur
MEPs from six political groups are stepping up pressure on the European Commission to completely ban the breeding and slaughter of animals in the EU.

Members of the European Parliament from six political groups are stepping up pressure on the European Commission to completely ban the breeding and slaughter of animals for fur. It's from sb.by.

According to RIA Novosti, 25 MEPs sent a letter to the executive body of the union with an appeal: “The final message of the European Commission should clearly provide for a legislative ban on the maintenance and killing of animals for the production of fur.”.
The European Commission had yet to decide by March whether it would propose a complete ban on fur farming or limit itself to tightening animal welfare requirements. Six months later, the decision has not been made. In 2023, 1.5 million people supported the European Civil Initiative.
The demand came amid the fact that the EU, on the contrary, excluded Russian sable skins from the sanctions ban on fur imports. The European Commission explained this by Russia’s dominant position in the global sable market and the lack of alternative suppliers. Exceptions were Italy and Greece, the EU’s largest buyers of Russian sable.
