Von der Leyen awarded her advisor a position in the EC

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen appointed her longtime advisor Jens Flosdorff to the post of head of the EC Directorate General for Communications — with a monthly salary of 18 thousand euros. 66 candidates applied for this position, writes sb.by.

According to TASS , the appointment was a kind of reward for Flosdorff: he worked for almost 20 years to form a public image of von der Leyen.

An anonymous employee of the European Commission noted that this practice had not been adopted in the EU structures before: employees of the personal apparatus of the EC heads were not transferred to senior positions in the units that directly report to them. This creates an obvious conflict of interest.

The peculiarity of the position is that its holder does not automatically resign when the composition of the European Commission changes (which occurs every five years) — unlike members of the personal office of the EC President.
