Lithuania is ready to pay the cost of establishing a permanent US military base if Washington agrees to deploy it. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Lithuania Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the correspondent of the agency “Minsk-Novosti”.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he would consider Lithuania's request for a permanent base.
According to Reuters, since 2019, a US armored battalion of almost 1,000 troops has been deployed on the territory of Lithuania on a rotational basis: troops arrive and drop every few months.
Mm. Sinkevičius said that he voiced the initiative for a permanent base to John Cole, Trump’s envoy, during their meeting in Vilnius last month.
- Our partners only need to make a political decision on the permanent deployment of troops, and Lithuania is ready to cover the costs associated with this, he wrote.
