A huge ocean moonfish, estimated to weigh about 400 kg, was discovered stranded on Cape Cod beach earlier this week.

According to the New York Post, an adult female ocean fish washed ashore at the mouth of the Herring River in Massachusetts, on the inner coast of Cape Cod.
“A huge moon-fish – one of the gentle giants of the ocean, known for its habit of basking on the surface and diving to depth – was found dead on the beach by a local resident walking along the coastline,” the material says.
This species lives in tropical and temperate oceans around the world – from Iceland to Chile – and migrates annually to winter in warmer waters.
“The moon-fish can weigh more than 2000 kilograms,” the newspaper writes.
The fish, captured in the photos, weighed about 400 kg, but "still represented an imposing giant.".
These fish, accustomed to deeper waters, can fall into shallow waters during low tide, where they can strand and die, as happened to the huge adult female moonfish found earlier this week.
