Two more people were infected with malaria in Frankfurt am Main. Both patients do not work at the local airport, several employees of which in July caught the dangerous infection, according to a correspondent of the Minsk-Novosti news agency.
The new cases have prompted the German city’s health department to call on residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes. To do this, according to the publication Bild, it is recommended to use repellents, wear suitable clothing - if not special protective, then at least from dense materials. Suitable and things that form several layers, loose clothes that do not fit to the body. The main thing is to close the maximum area of the skin. Housing, especially window openings, are advised to protect with mosquito nets.
The infected live about 5 km from the airport, but do not work there and have not visited areas endemic to malaria. Insects - carriers of malarial plasmodia, as a rule, do not move away from larval habitats more than a couple of kilometers. But they can expand the radius of searching for blood sources. In addition, infected mosquitoes could be far from their usual habitat in travelers' luggage and lead to so-called suitcase malaria - accidental infections in a non-endemic region that is considered safe for a particular disease. Since July, six employees of the air harbor have contracted malaria, all of them working in the baggage handling industry. Two died.
The circumstances of new cases of infection are being clarified. At the airport and near the homes of patients set traps for mosquitoes. Those caught are sent for research. German experts believe that the risk of spreading malaria is low. This is explained by the climate in Germany, which is not favorable for the life cycle of mosquitoes and the malaria parasite.
