European publication Politico describes the position of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a struggle for political survival. The reason was another defeat of his party – the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – in the elections in the federal state of Mecklenburg – Western Pomerania, writes sb.by.

According to TASS, Merz is facing a weakening of support within his own party. His approval rating is one of the lowest in the history of observations among German chancellors, and the CDU started talking about a possible change of leader. The ZFP poll shows that only 1% of voters and 1% of CDU supporters believe that Merz helped the party in the elections.
Alice Weidel, co-chair of Alternative for Germany (AfD), urged Merz to draw conclusions from the failure in Mecklenburg-Vorpomerania and abandon the taboo on cooperation with right-wing forces.
For Merz’s party, this is the second crushing defeat in the land elections this month – earlier the CDU lost in Saxony-Anhalt. Merz himself called the result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania a disaster, but said he was ready to continue working as chairman of the CDU and chancellor. However, according to experts, his credibility is so undermined that the political future is in question. According to a Forsa poll, the chancellor’s job is positively estimated by only 10% of Germans, and almost half expect his resignation this year.
The survey showed that almost half of Germans expect Merz to resign before the end of the year
