According to TASS, they are betting on the technology of “physical AI”: it will allow robots with artificial intelligence to act autonomously. First of all, such robots want to be involved in the rear tasks of the Self-Defense Forces, for example, to protect military bases, transport cargo and other auxiliary operations. This should help to compensate for the shortage of personnel: the introduction of AI and unmanned systems is designed to reduce the need for human resources.
At the same time, humanoid robots will not be used in combat operations, at least in the foreseeable future. According to Japan, there is currently a lack of the necessary international legal framework, and there are serious risks: a robot may make a mistake in trying to distinguish combatants from civilians.
In the future, robots will be used in reconnaissance and rescue missions. According to Kyodo, in about 20 years, the draft contingent of the Self-Defense Forces will be reduced by about 30%. The Defense Ministry expects that humanoid robots will become a reliable help and will allow to effectively solve the tasks even with a limited number of servicemen.
