According to RIA Novosti, the protest wave swept France on October 24 – more than 400,000 people took part in actions against the rising cost of living. Among the detainees, more than a hundred people are suspected of possessing items suitable for use as weapons, including knives, glass, metal balls and pyrotechnics.
The wave of discontent began in mid-September, the first on the streets of the suburbs of Paris were high school students: they sought to improve the condition of schools. Gradually, citizens angered by rising prices joined the protests and the protests spread to other regions of the country.
The peak of protest activity fell on October 17: a nationwide demonstration gathered, according to the Interior Ministry, about 550 thousand participants. To contain the crowd, the security forces used tear gas, noise grenades and water cannons.
