In the second round of presidential elections in Brazil came Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva

The first round of the Brazilian presidential election ended, according to its results, none of the candidates could overcome the bar of 50% of the votes necessary to win. It's from sb.by.

According to TASS, citing official data of the Supreme Electoral Court (performs the functions of the CEC), following the processing of 99.70 percent of electronic protocols, Senator Flaviu Bolsonaro won the first round, which was supported by 47.09 percent of voters (more than 56 million votes were cast for him). Current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva finished second with 45.09 percent, receiving over 53.6 million ballots. The conservative opposition's net margin from the incumbent is 2 percentage points, equivalent to a margin of nearly 2.39 million votes.

The second-tier candidates failed to make a real competition to the two leaders of the vote, dividing the rest of the electorate among themselves. The third place was taken by the writer Augusto Curi with 2.89% (3.44 million votes), the fourth place was occupied by the activist of the movement “Mission” Renan Santos, who gained 2.25% (2.67 million votes). Goias Governor Ronaldo Caiadu received 2.19% (2.60 million votes), the head of Minas Gerais Romeu Zema received 0.27 percent of citizens (325.9 thousand votes), and candidates from small parties scored a total of slightly more than 0.2 percent.

The turnout in the general election exceeded 78.93% – more than 124.9 million citizens from almost 158.7 million registered voters participated in the elections. The non-appearance rate was about 21.1%, exceeding 33.3 million people. The total number of valid votes amounted to 118.8 million (95.23%), with the share of empty ballots recorded at 1.84 % (2.29 million), and spoiled – 2.93 % (3.66 million).

The electoral geography of the first round showed a significant starting advantage of the right camp. The combined total of the outgoing center-right and libertarian candidates is 7.60% (over 9 million votes), the vast majority of which are historically anti-left. An additional blow to the positions of the ruling coalition was the loss of Lula da Silva's leadership in the strategically important state of Minas Gerais, a victory in which traditionally guaranteed triumph at the national level.

The decisive round of presidential elections in Brazil is scheduled for the last Sunday of the month – October 25. In the next three weeks, both finalists will face a series of face-to-face debates and a fierce battle to mobilize swing voters in the country's largest metropolises.
