The spread of the Ebola virus in North Kivu province, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is out of control. It's from sb.by.

According to TASS, Africanews, citing the international non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders, indicated that North Kivu accounts for almost 40% of new confirmed cases of Ebola in the country. Stephanie Hoffmann, coordinator of the Butembo Ebola treatment center, noted that most of the new cases are not related to previously identified chains of transmission:
- About 75 percent of all Ebola deaths occur outside health care facilities, meaning people die without ever getting to treatment or transit centers.
According to her, an additional problem is the reluctance of residents to recognize the possible infection and seek medical care due to fear of Ebola and specialized treatment centers. As a result, many patients remain at home, where they are cared for by relatives, further increasing the risk of further transmission.
At first, the outbreak was concentrated in the Butembo area, but now cases are recorded in all neighboring medical districts. The organization warns of the emergence of new foci of infection every week and a shortage of opportunities to treat patients.
The current Ebola outbreak began in Ituri province and spread for months before official detection in May. It is caused by the Bundibuggio virus and, according to Africanews, has become the deadliest in Congo's history. According to the latest data, the number of cases exceeded 8.6 thousand, more than 4.1 thousand of them died.
