Jumping, reading and kneeling: Yura Borisov staged a performance for “Laurel” at the Mariinsky Theatre
At the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, an unusual creative laboratory was held dedicated to the future adaptation of the novel by Evgeny Vodolazkin “Laurel”. Actor Yura Borisov, author of the book and composer Peter Dranga, together with the audience and the symphony orchestra, were looking for a form for the future of cinema. While reading the text, Borisov knelt in front of the hall, fully surrendering to the process. From the scene reports the correspondent of “MK in St. Petersburg” Camilla Latypova.

Instead of the usual presentation of the project, the creators staged a performance. The Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Peter Drangi played the music for the film, and Evgeny Vodolazkin and Yura Borisov read excerpts from the novel right on stage. The Oscar nominee played every line: jumped, read, sat on his knees, and completely dissolved in the text.
One of the main features of the laboratory was interaction with the public. In the hall and foyer installed 18 cameras, filming spectators. According to the idea of the creators, inspiration and "blessing" should come not to one director, but to all present - the principle of Russian conciliarity. Viewers can not only observe, but also influence the process.
Yura Borisov in this project acts not only as an actor, but also as a co-producer. According to the creators, the choice fell on him not by chance: the last time the team worked on another project Vodolazkin, the writer offered the main role of Konstantin Khabensky, and this time – Borisov. The artist agreed to participate in all creative processes.
