On October 10, the Yaroslavl Theatre named after Fyodor Volkov hosted the premiere of the play “Tribes” based on the work of the British playwright Nina Rein. The production was carried out by the main director of the theater Alexander Sozonov. Previously, the play was not staged on the Russian stage.
In the center of the plot is Billy, who was born deaf in a family of hearing people. He learned to read lips and adapted to the familiar world for his family, but never felt a complete understanding with loved ones. Everything changes after meeting Sylvia, who gradually loses her hearing and discovers sign language.
According to Alexander Sozonov, the work speaks about the difficulties of communication and separation that can arise even between the closest people. The director believes that the title of the play reflects the tendency of society to divide into groups according to national, generational, religious and other characteristics. The performance invites the viewer to think about their own identity and what prevents people from hearing each other.
The premiere took place in the year of the centenary of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf. The production features Arthur Gorbachev as Billy, Polina Sobestchenskaya as Silvia, Andrei Zubkov, Lyudmila Poshekhonov, Alena Tertova and Ivan Goryachev. For Gorbachev and Sobestchenskaya, this work was the first appearance on the stage of the Volkovo Theatre.
