“Over the city. Marc Chagall: about 50 thousand people visited the exhibition of one painting in Vitebsk

An impressive number of views gathered a unique exhibition project “Above the city. Mark Chagall” of the Art Museum of Vitebsk and the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow. During the work of the exposition from July 17 to September 14, about 50 thousand people visited it, the correspondent of sb.by reports.

As part of the project, for the first time in history, the most famous painting by artist Marc Chagall was brought to a small homeland by a genius. The event, which caused a real stir, was timed to the XXXV International Art Festival “Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk”.

- During the work of the exhibition on a paid basis, more than 30 thousand people visited it, said Tatiana Starinskaya, director of the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local History, which includes the Art Museum.

In addition, the masterpiece, in which you can “read” not only the story of the author’s love for his wife Bella, but also see the recognizable outlines of his native Vitebsk, saw numerous participants of free excursions. For example, employees of various cultural institutions of the Vitebsk region, museums of the country and, of course, Belarusbank, the main sponsor of the project, largely thanks to which “Above the City” was in Vitebsk, visited the exposition.

Tatiana Starinskaya voices an undoubted record:

- According to conservative estimates, in general, about 50 thousand people saw the exposition special for the Art Museum and the city. At the same time, the greatest excitement fell on the first days of the exhibition and the last weekend before its closing, that is, on September 12-13. On September 12, 1,400 tickets were sold. On Sunday, Monday, queues lined up from those wishing to see the master's canvas.

Today, one of the most popular paintings of our time is packed and waiting to return to the Tretyakov Gallery. The first example of cooperation with this institution of the Vitebsk Art Museum will be continued in new international projects.

- Having organized this exhibition, we raised the bar very high. There are already plans for next year. We will not reveal the intrigue, but we will say that the residents and guests of Vitebsk are waiting for pleasant cultural surprises, said Tatiana Starinskaya.
