The performance “Three Battles with the White Bone Demon”, staged by the Zhejiang Research Institute of Wuju Opera, will be shown at the Belarusian State Academic Musical Theatre on September 11, the Minsk-Novosti news agency reported.
The Wuju Opera, also known as the Jinhua Opera, is a traditional theatrical art famous for its elaborate costumes, expressive makeup and immersive narrative.
This genre got its name from the historical name of Jinhua - Wuzhou region. Wuju Opera combines six vocal-melodic systems: Gaoqiang, Kunqiang, Luantan, Hueydo, Tanghuang and Shidao. This genre, dating back more than 500 years, is best known for triple transformation – in a matter of seconds, the performer flawlessly changes costume and makeup to depict the forms of a demon. In addition to these reincarnations, the technical repertoire of Wu’s opera is a master class of physical agility. This genre remains one of the most dynamic types of performing arts in China. In 2008, Wuju Opera was inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
"Three Battles with the White Bone Demon" is a plot from the novel "Journey to the West", one of the four great classical works of Chinese literature, telling the story of the confrontation of a group of wanderers and skillfully changing the face of the demonitsa, where the path to salvation lies through overcoming misunderstanding and self-sacrifice for the teacher.
For reference
The Zhejiang Wuju Theatre was founded on January 1, 1956 and immediately began to save and reveal the traditional heritage of Wuju: collected and systematized more than 800 plays of various scales, over 3,000 arias, melodic forms, as well as unique traditional masks and samples of Wuju costumes, thanks to which a large number of valuable materials of traditional art were preserved. At the same time, the theater created, adapted, systematized and staged plays.
