On October 16, Ulrich Walter GmbH of Dipholz, Lower Saxony, announced the recall of Lebensbaum Bohnenkraut, gerebelt und getrocknet, a dried crushed chaber in 25-gram bags. The product revealed pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides. The manufacturer does not recommend using the affected products.

The main signs are the batch number (Charge) and the date of the minimum shelf life (MHD). You need to check them together:

The trail leads to the field?

The name of the detected substances is more like a password from a scientific laboratory. Meanwhile, pyrrolizidine alkaloids are the protection of some plants from herbivores created by nature itself. For them - a weapon of survival, for a person - a possible source of problems.

How does foreign chemistry get into cultural greenery? Together with the harvest can accidentally collect wild herbs, for example, certain species of crossbread. When drying and grinding, foreign plants are mixed with seasoning. The buyer is not able to recognize the impurity by smell and appearance. This is a known mechanism for contaminating foods, but not an established reason for the current recall. Who exactly was “accomplice” in this story, published information is not disclosed.

Some alkaloids after processing by the body turn into toxic compounds. First of all, the liver suffers, including its small blood vessels. At significant doses, serious violations of its work are possible.

The buyer is urged to look for the coveted Bio on the package - and then it turns out that nature has its own chemistry, and not always friendly to humans. Environmental labeling indicates compliance with established production rules, but does not guarantee the absence of any impurities. Weeds are not certified. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are also found in herbal teas, honey and other plant foods. For some products in the EU there are limit levels of their content. So "natural" is not synonymous with "absolutely safe." Even the greenest reputation does not replace laboratory testing.

No territorial alibi

The recall concerns supplies to twelve federal states, including Berlin, Hamburg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. But if your land isn't on the list, it's not yet an acquittal to the bags on the shelf. Shopping online and travel between regions has not been canceled. In addition, the full list of stores in the public message is not specified. Therefore, it is more reliable to check the marking than to try to restore the purchase route.

Return without tasting

If the batch number and MHD match, you should not “test for taste” or use the remainder a pinch. Contact the store for an explanation of the order of return: the need for a check and the terms of compensation in the initial warning are not detailed.
