Apples in Russia fell in price: experts told when prices will begin to rise

In October, apples became leaders in the decline in prices among food products: for the month the cost of a kilogram decreased by 7.5% to 141.8 rubles. Such dynamics is associated with the seasonal receipt of crops on the shelves. However, in December, fruits can begin to rise in price, experts told KP.RU.

Last month, prices for carrots also fell by 5.2%, onions by 4.7%, cabbage by 4.2% and sugar by 2.6%.

Expert Tamara Reshetnikova explained the cheaper apples increase supply. In autumn, farmers sell fruits that are not suitable for long-term storage or that have nowhere to place.

“As a result, farmers sell their crops quickly and cheaply so that it doesn’t go away,” she said.

According to expert Natalia Shagaida, the current nominal value of apples is comparable to the level of spring - autumn 2024. She called the October and November price declines a regular seasonal phenomenon. In addition, in 2026 there was no usual sharp rise in the price of fruits in July - early August.

The supply volume is also affected by the availability of storage facilities. Modern facilities that allow you to preserve the harvest until spring are not enough. If storage capacity grows more slowly than picking apples, the surplus goes on sale, which contributes to lower prices.

Despite spring frosts and hail that damaged some trees in southern Russia, the losses were offset by harvests in the central part of the country. Good conditions for growing apples have developed in the Lipetsk, Tula, Voronezh and Belgorod regions. At the same time, it will not be possible to repeat the record harvest of 2025 this season, according to Reshetnikova.

The share of domestic apples in Russian stores reached 85%, Shagaida said. This statistic does not fully include products from personal subsidiary farms. In the spring, when the stocks of Russian fruits will decrease or begin to lose their presentation, their place on the shelves will be taken by imports from Azerbaijan, Turkey, China, Serbia and Moldova.

Experts advise to take into account the seasonal dynamics when buying fruit: October and November are usually the most profitable time to buy Russian apples. From December, the cost will gradually increase due to the costs of long-term storage, logistics and fuel. According to Shagaida’s forecast, growth can continue until July – early August 2027.

Earlier it was reported that because of El Niño and wars in the world can greatly increase the price of bananas.

The nutritionist also revealed the real benefits of apples.
