The gynecologist explained, is it easy for a woman with diabetes to get pregnant?

The gynecologist of the 19th central district polyclinic of the city of Minsk Julia Kisel on the air of the project “School of Diabetes” on the YouTube channel “SEE AND LIVE” told about whether it is easy for a woman with diabetes to get pregnant.

Julia Kisel explained that it is difficult for a woman with diabetes to get pregnant:

- A woman with diabetes may have difficulties, since elevated glucose levels interfere with conception, fertilization, and further normal attachment and development of the embryo. A woman should definitely visit an endocrinologist to normalize her glucose indicators. It is also very important to assess the level of glycated hemoglobin and adjust the therapy she is taking.

Women suffering from type I and II diabetes often have such problems as late menarche, irregular menstrual cycle, infertility, early menopause. High blood glucose levels lead to oxidative stress in various tissues. Due to cell damage by free radicals, ovarian dysfunction occurs, embryo development is disrupted.

- It is also necessary to inform the obstetrician-gynecologist about the planned pregnancy, the specialist emphasized. This is necessary in order for the doctor to choose a reliable method of contraception for the period while the woman is examined and brings, let’s say, her indicators back to normal.

If treatment is carried out and the level of glucose in the blood is under control, then with diabetes, it is quite possible to successfully conceive and carry out a pregnancy.

- It is proved that optimization of glycemic control, identification and stabilization of late complications of diabetes mellitus, the doctor reassured. Concomitant diseases long before conception significantly reduce the frequency of development of various pathologies and complications of pregnancy and prevent the progression of vascular complications of diabetes during this period.

Currently, the approach to the problem of pregnancy against the background of diabetes has fundamentally changed. The emergence of “Schools of patients with diabetes mellitus”, new technologies in the production of highly purified genetically engineered human insulins and high-quality means of self-control allowed to train patients with diabetes to independently manage their disease. Timely and flexibly adjust insulin therapy depending on the results of self-control and achieve stable compensation for diabetes.
