In the Great seaport of St. Petersburg, employees of the Rosselkhoznadzor banned the import of more than 200 tons of oranges and tangerines from Africa due to infection with a dangerous Mediterranean fruit fly. This was reported in the press service of the North-Western Interregional Department.
The inspectors stopped six batches of fruit - 156 tons of oranges and 47 tons of mandarins, which were intended for St. Petersburg stores. During the inspection, live larvae were found in citrus fruits. Laboratory examination confirmed that the catch belongs to the Mediterranean fruit fly - a pest that can completely destroy the yields of hundreds of types of fruits and vegetables.
By law, all contaminated imported products were banned from entering the city. The whole batch of fruit was isolated so that the dangerous insect could not spread to Russia.
