In California, rescued 39-year-old climber from Florida, who broke his leg and received frostbite on Mount Shasta. The operation lasted several days and became one of the most difficult for local rescuers.
The man climbed to the summit on October 18 at around 15:00. He was wearing only sweatpants, a sweatshirt and sneakers. During the descent, the climber fell under a snow bridge and seriously injured his leg. He called emergency services at 17:00, but strong winds and poor visibility prevented the helicopter from landing for two days.
On October 19, two U.S. Forest Service rangers reached the victim on foot. They helped him with injury, frostbite and the first signs of hypothermia, and then stayed with him at an altitude of about 3.8 thousand meters overnight.
The next day, additional rescuers arrived and began lowering him down the mountain. Despite the danger of rockfalls, frost and wind speeds of up to 97 kilometers per hour, the group reached the evacuation site. A California State Police helicopter took advantage of the improved weather and took the climber to hospital. More than 30 people participated in the operation.
