Two men found guilty of murder after fatal shot in leg

In Australia, a jury found Joshua Pope and Gregory Pryor guilty of the murder of 64-year-old Greg Harding, who was fatally wounded while intruders entered his home.

One of the defendants claimed that he shot only to warn, but the men failed to convince the jury of their innocence. This was reported on October 23 by The Courier-Mail.

The crime took place on August 15, 2021, outside the Craignish Country Club in Queensland, Australia. According to the prosecution, Pope and Pryor entered Harding's home with the intent of stealing. During the incident, the owner of the house received a gunshot wound to the leg, which turned out to be fatal.

At the trial, the defense tried to challenge the murder charge. Pope insisted that the shot he fired was of a warning nature and was not aimed at deliberately killing the victim.

Pryor's lawyer, in turn, argued that his client may not have known about the presence of weapons in the accomplice. The defence thus questioned his responsibility for the consequences of a shot fired by another attacker.

The jury disagreed with the arguments presented. As a result of the proceedings, both men were found guilty of the murder of Harding.

As established during the proceedings, the fatal shot was made from a shotgun clip. The case also examined the circumstances of the collision with the owner of the house, who, according to the defense, had an axe.

It is noteworthy that earlier the third participant in the incident, Ashton Taylor McKinley, pleaded guilty to causing death by negligence and received five years in prison with a delay in the execution of the remainder of the sentence after serving time.

The final punishment for Pope and Pryor is due to be imposed on October 27. Murder in Queensland carries a mandatory life sentence.
