Germany - Who planted chlorine?
The scale of the operation was considerable. According to the police report, in the field of view of doctors were 125 visitors aged three to 75 years: someone needed examination, someone – help. However, this is not the number of confirmed poisonings. The mere fact of a medical examination does not mean that the cause of the illness was exposure to a chemical substance. Chlorine in this story appeared a defender with whom it is difficult to argue — measuring devices. While rescuers were looking for the source of trouble, the results of inspections did not give grounds to talk about a dangerous excess of its concentration. However, it was much more difficult to explain the complaints of tourists than to doubt the first version.
In this story, everything from the very beginning did not go according to the laws of the usual detective. The alarm was raised real, the emergency services arrived in earnest, but with the evidence there was a hitch. And the more obvious the cause of the accident seemed at first, the more questions the results of the inspections left. It all started where you least expect to get into the police report.
Paradise is in focus
On October 20, the resort complex Weissenheuser-Strand lived a familiar life: warm water, the noise of pools, children on the slides. But in the indoor water park Subtropisches Badeparadies ("subtropical bathing paradise"), located in the community of Wangels, Schleswig-Holstein, vacationers began to complain of irritation of the airways. At first, according to preliminary reports, about 20-30 children felt unwell. Adults then reported similar symptoms. At 18:45 the emergency services were called. Firefighters, police, medics and specialists in hazardous substances arrived at the scene.
Two adults with mild symptoms were taken to a nearby hospital. After outpatient treatment, they were discharged the same evening. No serious consequences were reported. But the question of why people got sick has not disappeared.
Devices versus version
The first suspicion fell on the high content of chlorine. The logic is clear: it is necessary for disinfecting water, but violation of the rules of its use can cause irritation of the mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Water park employees and firefighters checked the water, separately measured the air indicators. The result was surprising: there were no deviations that could explain the incident. That was the main oddity. There were complaints, two people visited the clinic, and the devices did not record a dangerous chemical trace. Any measurement is a snapshot of a particular moment, not a record of everything that has happened before. Indicators may have changed before the test. But it is also impossible to assume a short-term release of a dangerous substance just because the cause has not been established: there is no evidence of such a version yet. The initial suspicion remains unconfirmed. However, the absence of a recorded excess does not amount to an answer to the question of what happened.
Cleanliness with side effects
In the pool, trouble is able to deliver not only the disinfectant itself, but also the products of its reaction with substances entering the water along with bathers. One example is chloramines. Among them, trichloramine causes special attention: it can pass into the air and irritate the eyes, nose, throat and bronchi. There is also a detail that can surprise regular visitors to the pools. This sharp “chlorine” smell is often associated not with free chlorine, but with compounds that occur during disinfection. This is according to the German Federal Office for the Environment (Umweltbundesamt). In other words, smell alone cannot tell how much disinfectant is added to the water.
That is why not only water tests are important, but also ventilation, cleaning, control of processing byproducts. Their formation in itself is a normal chemical process, not evidence of violation of sanitary regulations.
Experts also considered a version with an increased concentration of chloramines in the water park. However, it was not confirmed. Expand the range of possible explanations managed, but to connect these compounds with the malaise of vacationers – no.
Open until clarified
Police have launched an investigation into the initial suspicion of causing bodily harm through negligence. Legal wording does not mean that anyone’s guilt has been proven. It is necessary to establish the cause of the ailment and check whether safety requirements have been violated. Not without confusion in the news reports. At first, German media reported that rescuers had completely evacuated the pool. Later t-online, referring to the corrected information of the police, said that the evacuation was not required. One loud detail disappeared, and the central question remained. On October 21, the Subtropical Bathing Paradise hosted guests again. The administration said water and air quality is monitored continuously and high hygiene standards remain a priority. The resort is again the usual routine. Investigators have unfinished work. Measurements found no elevated chlorine content, the chloramines version was not confirmed, and the cause of the complaints remains unknown. You can enter the Subtropical Paradise again. But to get out of this story with a ready answer so far no one has succeeded.
