Maniac salesman killed 14 people and avoided life sentence

Denis Kalinin sold household appliances to pensioners, and then returned under the pretext of a forgotten folder. In 2005, he killed 14 people in the Rostov and Pskov regions. Seven years later, a trace on a sold teapot helped establish his identity. Kalinin was found in the colony before the end of the term after another robbery. For 14 murders and 11 robberies, he received 19 years.

In November 2005, a 78-year-old resident of Morozovsk opened the door to a home appliance seller. Kalinin had already visited him, but the pensioner refused to buy. Now the seller explained that he left a folder of documents in the house.

The owner offered to wait in one room, and went to look for another. He returned, said he had found nothing, sat down on a bench and asked for his ID.

At this point, Kalinin attacked. Hit the pensioner with his foot, continued to beat him when he fell, and then strangled him with a pillow.

During the investigation, Kalinin said that he held the pillow for several minutes. After that, he searched the closet, took 2000 rubles and left.

His testimony about the murder was published in February 2013.

Kalinin worked in a company selling household appliances. He traveled to cities and towns, offered the owners of private houses electric kettles, massagers and other small devices.

The sale gave rise to a second visit. Kalinin returned for the allegedly forgotten folder or offered to show how to use the purchase. The owners let him in.

In October 2005, a 79-year-old resident of the village Zimovniki bought a household appliance from him. After a while, the seller returned for the folder. The woman opened the door. Kalinin beat her to death and took 3,500 rubles.

The man, who was almost 100 years old, bought an electric massager from Kalinin for 1500 rubles. The next day, the seller came back and asked for water. While the owner followed her, Kalinin searched the boxes. The pensioner came back with a mug and the guest pounced on him.

Reports about the episode, citing medics, indicated that the man was struck 14 times. In the underwear closet Kalinin found 3000 rubles. The same day he lost them in the slot machines.

In Pskov, he killed a 93-year-old woman with an axe, took 1,500 rubles and set fire to a house.

Kalinin hoped to find savings from pensioners. He told investigators: “I robbed them because they could not resist.”.

In the Rostov region, Kalinin attacked in Aksai, Bataisk, Zimovnikovsky, Tsimlyansky and Morozovsky districts. Because of the traveling trade, he was nicknamed the “maniac salesman”.

In Aksai, Kalinin killed a 94-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife. Two women aged 66 and 80 were also reported killed. In Tsimlyansk, his victim was a 79-year-old man.

In another house in Morozovsk, Kalinin killed a pensioner and her tenant. The woman was beaten, the man stabbed in the neck. He took the money and his cell phone.

According to Igor Berezin, deputy head of the Rostov Region Investigation Department, Kalinin claimed that he did not carry the knife with him. He beat victims with his hands and feet and used objects he found at crime scenes.

The attacks stopped. The crimes remained unsolved.

In the case of the murder of a resident of Zimovnikov, a fuzzy fingerprint was preserved. He was checked on the database, but no match was found.

The analytical group of the investigative department in the Rostov region returned to the unsolved murders. Employees compared the circumstances of the attacks, the actions of the killer and the nature of the damage to the victims.

They believe that the crimes were committed by one person. The files were combined and the prints checked again.

The re-check brought investigators to Denis Kalinin. The employee of the investigation Department Galina Gagalayeva told about the traces preserved on the electric kettle, which he sold to one of the victims.

In 2012, investigators found Kalinin in a colony in the Pskov region. After another robbery, he served an eight-year sentence.

For the murders in the Rostov region, he was not tried. The deadline was coming to an end, and Kalinin was preparing to be released when investigators came to see him in the 2005 attack case.

Kalinin first denied involvement in the killings, then began to talk about the attacks. From the Pskov colony he was brought to the Rostov region for investigative actions. According to Gagalayeva, Kalinin admitted guilt on all episodes.

In a video posted in February 2013, he walks up to a private home accompanied by staff and walks through a gate. The investigator asks if the entrance and fencing have changed since 2005.

There's a dummy in the room. Kalinin takes a pillow and shows how he strangled the owner. The investigator clarifies the position of the victim, the force of impact, the size and color of the pillow.

During interrogations, Kalinin told about the murders in the Pskov region. As a result, the investigation established: in the Rostov region he killed 12 people, in Pskov – two.

The investigation was completed in December 2013. Kalinin was charged with 11 robberies and the murder of 14 people in 11 episodes.

The case was considered by the Morozovsky district court of the Rostov region. Psychiatrists recognized Kalinin as capable of answering for his actions. The murder clause allowed for life imprisonment.

However, Kalinin entered into a pre-trial cooperation agreement and fully admitted guilt. This was confirmed by the assistant chairman of the court Elena Aleshina.

In the imposition of a sentence under such an agreement, life imprisonment was not applied. Part 4 of Article 62 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation limited the punishment to two-thirds of the maximum urgent deprivation of liberty provided for the corresponding crime.

For murder, this limit was calculated from 20 years. The final term for murder and robbery was appointed by the court for a set of crimes.

On March 14, 2014, the Investigative Directorate reported the court decision. For 14 murders and 11 robberies, Kalinin was sentenced to 19 years in a strict regime colony and two years in prison after his release.

The 19-year sentence has not been counted again since the murder conviction. According to Alyoshina, the court read part of the term that Kalinin has already served for the previous robbery.
