In Texas, 45-year-old Michael Nevares pleaded guilty to murder for which another man spent more than 25 years in prison

In Texas, Michael Nevares, 45, pleaded guilty to murder for which another man spent more than 25 years in prison. The jury sentenced him to 21 years in prison. The result of the trial was reported by the Dallas County Attorney's Office.
The murder took place on July 14, 1997, outside a nightclub in the Deep Ellum area. 21-year-old Damond Wittman was killed. Nevares was 16 years old at the time, CBS reports.
In 1998, Martin Santillan was convicted of the crime. He received a life sentence and continued to insist on his innocence.
In 2021, the prosecutor’s office, which checks the validity of the convictions, resumed the investigation. The material evidence was sent for further research using more modern DNA analysis techniques.
On a sports shirt found near the crime scene, found genetic traces of unknown persons. Further scrutiny brought investigators to Nevares.
In 2023, Santillan was rehabilitated. The trial of the man who confessed to the murder has now been completed.
