Found a smartphone at a stop and hid in a barn: a resident of the Shegarsky district will go on trial for theft
52-year-old man who never used a cell phone decided to keep someone else's expensive gadget

The Prosecutor’s office of the Shegarsky district of the Tomsk region approved the indictment in the criminal case of theft against a 52-year-old local resident.
So, in August 2026, a villager who had never used cell phones found someone else’s expensive smartphone on a bus stop bench. Instead of trying to return the gadget or report the find, he decided to keep it for himself: he turned off the device, brought it home and hid it in the shed, hoping to wait for some time, and then start using someone else’s phone as his own.
However, the man failed to master modern technologies - soon the gadget was discovered and seized by police officers. The man pleaded guilty. The criminal case was sent to the court for consideration on the merits.
