In the Indian state of Manipur, as a result of an attack by armed men, at least three people were killed and four others were injured. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.
According to a senior police official, Lhari Dorjee Lhatu, the attackers opened fire on 14 residents from the Meitei community. Representatives of this community blamed armed members of the cookie community who profess Christianity for the attack. In turn, cookies have denied the allegations.
The incident sparked protests in the state capital Imphal. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called an emergency security meeting.
The standoff between the predominantly Hindu Maitai community and the Christian Cookie community has been ongoing since May 2023. The conflict is connected, in particular, with disagreements over economic benefits and quotas for public positions.
The previous death toll from unrest in the state occurred in January.
