More than 2,500 people have been detained since the beginning of the unrest in France since October 17, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin told TF1 television. According to him, the number is 2,513 detainees, of which 67 have already been detained.
Commenting on the arson attack on the Limoges City Hall, as a result of which its bell tower collapsed, Darmanen noted that the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office could join the investigation.
The October 17 protests in Paris and across the country were sparked by rising fuel prices and falling purchasing power. The organizers estimated the number of participants at 800 thousand people, the Ministry of Internal Affairs - at 550 thousand, which is twice higher than the forecasts of analysts of law enforcement agencies. In a number of cities, the actions resulted in clashes with the police, pogroms and robberies. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has vowed to continue pursuing all those involved.
