Spouses tied up and brutally killed for money that was spent on gambling

In South Korea, 53-year-old Park Yong-soo was suspected of brutally murdering a married couple for gambling money. According to investigators, the man tied up friends, dealt with them with a knife and strangulation, and then stole bank cards.

Received from the accounts of the dead 11 million won, he completely lost in the gambling establishment. Police found that the suspect had been preparing for the attack in advance and tried to cover up traces of the crime.

According to the South Korean news agency Newsis, on October 16, the police of the city of Naju handed over the materials of the criminal case to the prosecutor's office. Investigators believe the double murder was premeditated, though the detainee himself continues to deny the premeditated nature of the attack.

The tragedy occurred late in the evening of October 5 in a private house in the Wangok district of Naju. According to police, the crime was committed between 21:28 and 23:57. The victims were a man and a woman, aged 60 to 69, with whom the suspect was familiar.

The investigation found that before the attack Park Yong-soo several times inspected the surroundings of the house. On the evening of the crime, he put on a hat and a mask, and then reached the home of the couple on a previously stolen bicycle.

When the owner did not open the gate, the man, according to police, entered the house through an unlocked window. There he tied the hands and feet of the couple with duct tape and clothes. Investigators found that the attacker repeatedly stabbed one of the victims with a knife, and strangled the other.

The bodies of the couple were found on October 6 in different rooms of the house. By this time, the suspect had already left the crime scene and managed to use the stolen bank cards.

First, the man withdrew from the account of the dead 6 million won in cash. He spent the money in a gambling establishment in Gwangju. When this amount ended, the suspect transferred another 5 million won to the owner of the establishment as payment for playing points. He also spent them completely.

Special attention of investigators attracted the actions of the man after the murder. Leaving the house, he loaded his bicycle into a 1 ton truck belonging to the victim and left the village.

Approximately 5.7 kilometers later, the suspect abandoned the car near the Chuxanbo hydraulic structure and continued on his bike. After a few hundred meters, he got rid of the two-wheeled transport, after which he left the pursuit on foot and by car.

According to police, the man prepared a change of clothes in advance. During the flight, he changed his clothes, threw away the things in which he was in the attack, as well as a knife and mobile phone of one of the victims. Investigators believe that in this way he tried to destroy evidence and confuse the route of his movement.

Despite the measures taken, the police restored the sequence of his actions with the help of CCTV cameras and other evidence. On October 7, the suspect was detained near a residential complex in Muan County, where he lived.

During interrogations, Park Yong-soo claimed that he came to a friend of a man because of a monetary debt, and the murder was not planned. However, the police did not receive documents from him confirming this version.

Investigators concluded that the reason for the attack was the financial difficulties of the suspect and the desire to obtain funds for gambling. In favor of the preliminary preparation of the crime, according to the police, testify to the inspection of the house, pre-prepared clothes, the use of other people's vehicles and attempts to get rid of evidence.

On October 14, South Korean law enforcement officially revealed the identity of the suspect, releasing his name, age and photo. The decision was explained by the special cruelty of the crime, the severity of the consequences and the public interest.

Before transferring the case to the prosecutor’s office, the man again told reporters that he had not planned the murder. Asked about the cause of the incident, he referred to a debt relationship with one of the victims.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crime, including possible additional motives. Relatives of the victims are working with specialists who are tasked with providing psychological assistance and assistance in obtaining legal support.

Park Yong-soo is in custody.
