At least ten people were killed and nine suffered severe burns and injuries as a result of a severe fire that completely destroyed the Toptop Resto and Resort complex in the resort district of Cox's Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Pratidin news outlet, citing the country's Fire Service, six members of the same family were among the dead.
The fire broke out in the early morning in the coastal area of Inani along the Marin Drive highway and in a matter of minutes engulfed the wooden buildings of the hotel. The fire service officially stated that the institution operated without a mandatory fire safety permit and license, ignoring the previously issued regulations on the high level of fire danger.
Victims with extensive thermal burns were urgently admitted to Cox's Bazar District Hospital. The district authorities began a large-scale inspection of all hotels and bungalows made of combustible materials on the popular coast.
