A major road accident involving eight vehicles, including two city transit buses, has claimed the lives of three people in the northeastern district of Calgary, Canada. According to local police, another 19 people received injuries of varying severity and burns, including a law enforcement officer who arrived at the scene.
According to preliminary findings of the investigation, one of the regular buses provoked a chain reaction of collisions at the intersection of Saddletown-Circle, crashing into cars and a van, and then rammed the second bus standing at the stop. The powerful impact started a severe fire engulfing both passenger vehicles, one of which was powered by compressed natural gas.
Arrived fire crews quickly eliminated open burning, and rescuers had to use special equipment to unlock one of the drivers trapped in the cockpit. City officials and the provincial prime minister of Alberta expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the victims; the crash area was completely closed off for detailed forensics.
