According to the publication Bild, citing data from local law enforcement agencies, a serious fire occurred in the Kellsteinhaus complex, better known as the Eagle's Nest, which is located in the Bavarian district of Berchtesgaden. The police are currently considering a version of deliberate arson.
According to journalists, the signal of a fire in the building came in the evening hours of Friday, shortly after 21:00 local time (22:00 Moscow time). Immediately after that, rescue crews and police outfits were promptly sent to the scene of the incident.
A representative of the Berchtesgaden police told the publication that the building of the complex is completely engulfed in flames, and rescue services are conducting a large-scale operation to eliminate it. At the same time, the official added that law enforcement officers do not exclude the version of intentional arson.
According to the representative of law enforcement agencies, during the journey to the scene of the incident, the police met a motorcyclist. The guards passed this information to the fire brigades that followed them, who subsequently detained the man. At the moment, the involvement of the detainee in the fire has not been established.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. According to police, as a result of the incident, no one was injured, and there were no people inside the building at the time of the fire.
The Kellsteinhaus complex, informally called the Eagle's Nest, was erected in the summer of 1938 as a gift for the head of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler. After the end of World War II, the building functioned as a mountain hotel. The building is currently owned by the federal state of Bavaria.
