On the Kenyan highway linking Mombasa to Nairobi, a bus and a truck collided on the morning of October 25. The victims of this head-on impact were at least 22 people. According to the Associated Press, people were traveling from the funeral.
Around seven o'clock in the morning, a traffic accident occurred in the Kanga area, close to the village of Mtito Andey. There were 45 passengers inside the bus. After the accident, emergency services arrived at the scene, and the victims were taken to nearby hospitals.
Abdullahi Khalifa, the commissioner of Makueni County, said that the bus, trying to overtake other cars, collided with an oncoming truck. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been established.
A local health official said 17 people died at the scene and five others died in hospital from their wounds. Some victims are still being treated. Authorities do not rule out that the number of victims may increase.
This stretch of highway has been known as a high-risk area for a long time. A few weeks before the events described here, a bus crashed, killing 17 people. Kenya’s National Transportation and Safety Authority (NTAS) has previously listed the route as one of the most emergency roads in the country, and has urged more precautions.
