In northeastern Japan, in Miyagi Prefecture, the second power unit of the Onagawa NPP was stopped for repair. The reason was the leakage of technical water containing a small amount of radioactive substances. This was announced by the owner of the station – energy Corporation Tohoku Electric Power.
According to the company, the leak comes from a faulty valve. Specialists collect water with radioactive substances. Penetration outside the nuclear power plant was not detected, there is also no threat to the environment, the corporation said.
The power unit will be stopped for 10 days - for inspection and replacement of faulty nodes. Currently, technical water flows at a rate of about 0.2 tons per hour.
Recall that in May, the Onagawa nuclear power plant temporarily stopped working due to the release of a small amount of radioactive vapor. This station was stopped after a major accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in the spring of 2011, but it was recommissioned in 2024.
Until the spring of 2011, Japan operated 54 nuclear reactors, which generated a third of the electricity consumed. After the accident at Fukushima 1, they were all stopped. At present, the country is partially restarting nuclear power plants in compliance with new, increased safety measures. There are 14 reactors in operation in Japan and the number is increasing.
Russia is preparing to build a nuclear power plant on the moon.
