The habit of endlessly flipping the tape in a smartphone can lead to deterioration of memory, attention and sleep, researchers at the University of Semmelweis in Hungary found, reports “Science Mail” with reference to the journal Acta Psychologica. The study involved young people from 18 to 35 years.
According to the authors, the dependence on the phone (the desire to uncontrollably flip the tape) is associated not so much with personality traits as with weak self-control and fear of missing something important.
The study participants were divided into three groups: “purely social” (mostly communication), “easy content consumers” and “heavy content consumers.”.
The latter spent four to five hours a day with a smartphone or more, mostly passively consuming content. This group scored worse on memory and attention tests than expected for their age, complained of worse sleep, and fought harder against the urge to constantly check their phone.
The scientists also added that long-term smartphone use has physical consequences, such as tilting the head forward, which can affect posture and balance skills.
Previously, scientists reminded about the influence of monitors and gadgets on the development of children. It turned out that children who spend too much time playing video games, on social networks and watching commercials and movies may lag behind in learning and language development.
