Within the framework of the All-Russian action “Week without turnstiles”, specialists of the Arkhangelsk Regional Clinical Hospital conducted four excursions for students of grades 10–11 of Arkhangelsk schools. The action is aimed at familiarizing children with the activities of organizations and popularizing popular professions.
During the week, the specialists of the perinatal center organized four career guidance events, which were attended by about 25 schoolchildren who plan to connect life with medicine. The children visited different units of the center: in the ultrasound room they heard the baby’s heartbeat and learned the frequency of his heartbeat, visited the wards and the intensive care unit, together with the radiologist, they studied X-rays. In addition, the students saw how the sanitary service for newborns works and how the kuvez – a specialized neonatal incubator, adapted for use on board helicopters and airplanes – is arranged.
“We specially escort the children all the way,” said the main midwife of the perinatal center Svetlana Aleshin. So they see not separate offices, but a whole system where everything is interconnected. It is important that schoolchildren understand: behind each stage there is a team, and the life and health of mother and baby depends on its coherence. When children see this system from the inside, they form a holistic view of the profession - not only about doctors, but also about nurses, midwives, radiologists, specialists in medical aviation. This helps to make an informed choice and understand that medicine is a team work, where everyone in his place is responsible for the overall result.”.
Immersion in the real work of departments makes the strongest impression on schoolchildren.
“The most impressive is how the resuscitation and sanitary aviation are arranged,” one of the schoolgirls shared. We saw how everything really works, how the arrangement of floors is thought out: all the rooms are located so that patients do not have to go far. I now realize that behind every seemingly simple action is the hard work of a team of professionals, and this only strengthens my desire to connect life with medicine.
Participation in the action “Week without turnstiles” became part of the systematic career guidance work of the regional hospital. According to Ekaterina Olfert, the head of AOKB, over the past year, the specialists of the medical institution seven times became a platform for getting acquainted with the profession, and about 100 schoolchildren learned more about various areas of medicine.
For each group, we build the program taking into account age and interests: we show specialized departments, talk about the work of doctors and nurses, familiarize them with modern equipment. Children can ask any questions to specialists, learn about current areas in the labor market and understand what specialty is suitable for them, said Ekaterina Olfert. But our task is not just to show the guys the offices and equipment. It is important to help them see the institution from the inside, to feel the atmosphere in which specialists work, to understand their motivation and responsibility. On excursions, we also tell the children how they can get a job in medical institutions, talk about the target direction, which is an understandable prospect for the child and his family, and for us it is the preparation of an interested specialist who is ready to work in our team.
