What is absolutely impossible to do Volgograd on October 21, so as not to cause trouble
According to the national calendar, October 21, 2026 is the day of Triphon and Pelageia

Tryphon Vyatsky, who lived in the XVI-XVII centuries, was a strict ascetic who wore a hairdress and heavy creeks. He founded the first men's monastery in Khlynov (now Kirov), receiving a blessing from Ivan the Terrible himself. Pelagia of Antioch, who lived in the IV century, was a famous courtesan before baptism, but after preaching about the Last Judgment, she distributed all her wealth to the poor and retired to Jerusalem, where she led a harsh monastic life under the guise of a man.
Fixing and Preparing for Winter
The people called this day the “fixing.” Since October 21, active preparations for the harsh winter began in Russia. There was even a saying: “Triphon fixes a fur coat, Pelageya sews mittens.” Women sat behind the spinning wheel, weaved and sewed warm clothes, and men repaired winter harness, sleighs and checked inventory. It was believed that from this day the cold weather is finally established, and every hour should be spent with benefit for the household.
What can and should be done
The main rule of the day is to do household chores and restore order. The hostess baked porridge and prepared turnip dishes to gain strength before the long cold. Special attention was paid to the elderly: they were prepared the most delicious and warm treats, showing care and respect.
Strict bans of the day
Ancestors believed that October 21 is the day when any mistakes can come back in winter. It was strictly forbidden to be lazy. It was believed that those who would idle on Tryphon and Pelagia would freeze and be bored all winter.
It was impossible to quarrel with loved ones and raise their voice. It was said that winter would “remember” all the grievances and, in retaliation, give out evil frosts and piercing winds.
It was also not recommended to go on a long road without warm clothes and without a thorough check of transport - the risk of catching a cold or facing a breakdown was too great. Another strict ban related to finance: to lend money or things on this day was considered a bad omen, leading to ruin and loss.
How ancestors predicted the weather
Weather on October 21 judged what the coming winter will be. If it snowed on that day, it would be an early and snowy winter. A warm day foreshadowed mild cold, and a cold and windy winter with snowstorms. If there were still leaves on the trees, winter should not come soon.
Morning frost promised a rich harvest next year. Low and fast floating clouds spoke of a rapid and sharp cooling. And if the crows began to cry loudly and anxiously, this is a sure sign that it will soon snow.
