On Saturday, October 17, Orthodox Kalugans honor the memory of the Hieromartyr Hierotheos, Bishop of Athens, and also remember the acquisition of the relics of Saints Guria and Barsonofius. In the national calendar, the date was called Erofeev Day, or Leshin. It was believed that by this time the autumn work is coming to an end, and the house must be prepared for the winter.
According to ancient legends, October 17 should not go into the forest alone: people were afraid to get lost and associated it with the tricks of the wild. They also tried not to start big things, not to start weddings, avoid quarrels and hard work. The house maintained order, did not leave dirty dishes after eating and in the evening closed windows and doors.
Among other popular prohibitions were washing and drying laundry, washing the head. Men were advised not to eat with a knife, fearing loss of strength.
As told earlier “MK in Kaluga”, Kalugans told about the traditions of Denis Pozimne.
