Folk signs: what not to do Volgograd on October 19, Fomin day
On October 19, the Orthodox Church remembers the Apostle Thomas, one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ. In the national calendar, this day is known as Fomin Day, and also as the day of Thomas Khlebnik

It is no coincidence that the main symbol of the date was bread - it was considered the personification of prosperity. As the saying goes, “Thomas came and brought bread to the table.” By this time, the harvesting of cabbage and beets was over, the time of winter pickles began.
The hostess certainly baked fresh bread and fragrant pies - to treat the household and guests who came by. The baking made on October 19 was credited with a special power: it was believed that it attracted good luck and prosperity to the house.
There was a custom to put a baked loaf, wrapped in a towel, in the "red" corner - as a talisman. The villagers were convinced that such bread would become a family talisman throughout the winter, which protects the home from adversity and guarantees prosperity.
On Fomin day, the house was fumigated with herbs - for example, wormwood, to rid it of the accumulated negative.
But with money on this day should be more careful: it was not recommended to lend or borrow. It was believed that this way a person “distributes” his own luck, wealth and well-being – and this will later turn into poverty and financial difficulties. It was not worth bragging about income or expensive gifts: it could cause envy and loss.
An unfavorable date was considered for the start of new cases or large projects - any undertakings could end in failure. Plus, on Fomin day they avoided quarrels and conflicts: they promised long troubles and discord among household members.
Holidays were not welcomed either. Despite the completion of basic agricultural work, laziness and evade work was not supposed. The day was traditionally devoted to active chores, insulation of the home and checking winter reserves.
Morning frost on the trees foreshadowed early frosts and severe cold. Rain on this day promised prolonged warmth and late onset of winter, and clear and dry weather spoke of a rapid cold snap - winter will come earlier than usual.
