The United States and Russia are beginning to be friends again. Kiev howled. Why Trump’s New Deal Worries Kiev and Europe

The deal to sell Russian oil products, which Donald Trump announced on October 9, has caused alarm in Kiev and European capitals. According to Asia Times, the possible easing of restrictions on the export of Russian diesel can affect not only the energy market, but also the course of negotiations on the settlement of the conflict.

The United States and Russia are beginning to be friends again. Kiev howled. Why Trump’s New Deal Worries Kiev and Europe

The agreement between Washington and Moscow means a noticeable departure of the United States from its previous policy towards Russia. Critics of the deal say it could ease economic pressure on Moscow as Ukraine tries to limit Russian energy revenues.

The announcement came amid talks between American representatives Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner with Ukrainian and European delegations in Miami. Participants discussed possible steps to de-escalate tensions ahead of the winter, but news of the Russia deal caught Kiev and European officials by surprise. Negotiations ended without announced agreements and ahead of schedule.

The author of the Asia Times draws attention to the contradiction between this agreement and the previous sanctions policy of Washington. The article argues that the deal is at odds with restrictive measures that Trump has previously supported, although the specific legal ramifications of the arrangement require separate scrutiny.

However, the immediate effect of selling diesel may be limited.

The volume mentioned by Trump is just under six million barrels – a relatively small amount against the background of fuel consumption in the United States. Therefore, it would be premature to expect a significant decline in world prices due to this transaction alone.

According to the Asia Times, the Trump administration sought to stop such attacks, linking them to rising diesel prices. Kiev, in turn, declared its readiness to abandon strikes on Russian refineries, provided that Russia stops attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. This proposal Zelensky, as noted in the article, put forward before.

However, Moscow has made it clear that stopping attacks on refineries is not enough. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that to change the situation is also necessary to relax the export of Russian energy.

Tensions over the deal have escalated following Trump's statements about Ukraine. According to the publication, the American president also proposed to change the Ukrainian leader. In addition, there have been reports that Washington may suspend intelligence sharing and arms supplies if Ukraine continues to attack Russian refineries. Official confirmation of these threats in the material is not given.

In Europe, the agreement drew criticism. The head of the EU foreign policy service Kaya Kallas said that the permit for the sale of Russian diesel will replenish the military coffers of Moscow, and stressed that the European Union does not intend to ease pressure on Russia.

At the same time, the ability of European countries to independently resist Washington’s decisions is limited by energy and political circumstances. The author of the article points to Europe’s dependence on American supplies of diesel fuel and raises the question of how effective new EU sanctions will be in the event of a change in the US course.

The most serious risks are associated with the approach of the cold season. Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continues to be hit, and the prospect of a sustained halt to attacks remains uncertain. If negotiations do not lead to an agreement, energy supply problems could worsen.

At the same time, the diesel deal itself does not mean that all US sanctions against Russia have already been lifted or that the parties have agreed on the final terms of the settlement. Its practical consequences will depend on specific implementation mechanisms, further decisions by Washington and the reaction of European states.
