Scientists have called an unobvious way to slow down the aging of the brain

Scientists came to the conclusion that getting rid of deep abdominal fat, the so-called visceral fat, which accumulates around the internal organs, is associated with slowing down the aging of the brain, better memory and more brain volume years later, and more important was not the overall weight loss, but the loss of this internal fat.
The work was published in the journal Nature Communications. Experts from Ben-Gurion University in Israel followed participants in the weight loss program for 5 to 16 years, comparing changes in adipose tissue with brain status according to MRI and cognitive tests, and the analysis included hundreds of people, mostly men aged about sixty years.
It turned out that the more visceral fat a person had, the worse they performed on cognitive tests regardless of body mass index, but a noticeable reduction in visceral fat predicted a larger brain volume on long-term observation, including a larger volume of gray matter and the hippocampus, important for memory. Curiously, the key mediator was not cholesterol or inflammation, but blood sugar control: it was fasting glucose indicators that were associated with brain changes, which fits into the idea that visceral fat harms the brain primarily through impaired glucose metabolism.
The conclusion is practical: to protect the brain with age, it is worth fighting belly fat through nutrition and physical activity, rather than just trying to lose weight on the scales. Visceral fat, which accumulates around the internal organs, has long been considered much more dangerous than subcutaneous fat, since it supports chronic inflammation and is associated with diabetes and heart disease, and now the brain is increasingly adding to the list of its negative effects. The good news is that visceral fat is the first to go away with proper nutrition and regular physical activity.
