Scientists have discovered the unexpected danger of lack of salt for the brain
Both excess and serious lack of salt in the diet can negatively affect memory and brain function

As an excess, so a serious lack of salt in the diet can adversely affect memory and brain function. This conclusion was made by the authors of a study published in the scientific journal Food Research International (FRI). The experiment was conducted on mice with gut microbiota derived from humans.
For 14 weeks, the animals were fed a normal, extremely low or very high salt diet. Subsequent tests showed that mice from both “extreme” groups performed worse on short-term working and long-term memory tasks compared to animals fed a balanced diet.
At the same time, the mechanisms of influence differed. The lack of salt was accompanied by a decrease in the levels of proteins important for memory and neural connections in the hippocampus. Excess salt, on the contrary, increased inflammatory processes, changed the composition of the intestinal microbiota and reduced the content of some useful products of the vital activity of bacteria.
The authors believe that the results highlight the importance of balance. Potentially unfavorable may be not only excessive consumption of salt, but also too strict its restriction. The findings are based on mice, so more research will be needed to determine the optimal and minimally safe salt levels for humans.
