Volgograd explained why perfectionism interferes with life

In today’s world, where the cult of success and the endless race for performance have become the norm, perfectionism is less and less perceived as a harmless character trait. Many people used to call it a “good flaw”, indicating high motivation. But the attractive facade of idealism often hides not productivity, but its exact opposite – exhausting stagnation. In clinical psychology, this condition is known as perfectionist paralysis.

Why the brain blocks action

According to the candidate of medical sciences, clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, deputy director of the Institute of Clinical Psychology and Social Work of Pirogov University Ekaterina Orlova, the essence of the phenomenon lies in the paradoxical reaction of the psyche to excessive demands. Where a person with healthy self-esteem sees a challenge or opportunity for growth, the perfectionist sees a threat to his or her identity. A mistake for him is not a point of learning, but an existential failure that destroys the image of a competent professional.

The protective mechanism of avoidance works: the brain blocks action, preferring anxiety from inaction to unbearable pain from potential imperfection. A person sits down at a table, opens a document, but instead of a creative flow, he encounters a blank slate. The psyche, locked in the clutches of thinking on the principle of “all or nothing”, does not allow intermediate states: a draft or sketch is perceived as a ready-made product, which must be perfect on the first attempt. Since perfection is unattainable, the very fact of starting becomes psychologically impossible.

What happens to the body

From the point of view of psychophysiology, this is a state of chronic stress, in which the sympathetic nervous system is activated. The amygdala interprets an upcoming task as a threat, and the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning and working memory, is functionally disabled due to an overabundance of cortisol. A person cannot think strategically: his resources are spent not on solving a problem, but on suppressing anxiety.

How to get out of a vicious circle

The way out is not through increased self-control, but through a change in the cognitive framework. The first step is the legalization of imperfection: in psychotherapy, the method of exposure is used when the client is asked to deliberately create imperfect products. The goal is to break the reflex of fear of error and get proof that disaster is not happening. The second step is to shift the focus from the result to the process. For example, you can work on a task for a strictly limited time without the right to edit what is written. The third component is the separation of personality value from performance.

According to Ekaterina Orlova, perfectionist paralysis is not the whim of a talented person, but a serious cognitive distortion. The key to this psychological prison lies not in the pursuit of unattainable perfection, but in the acceptance of one’s own right to error.
