In the Southern Urals, a lack of iodine in soil and water affects its content in local products. Specialists of Chelyabinsk GKB No. 2 reminded how to reduce the risk of deficiency and what symptoms should consult a doctor.
Iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland. Its hormones are involved in the regulation of metabolism and affect the work of many organs. With a long-term lack of a trace element, health problems can occur, and the first manifestations are not always obvious.
Constant fatigue, drowsiness, memory impairment, dry skin, weight gain - all this is associated with disorders of the thyroid gland. But one symptom to determine the lack of iodine can not: similar complaints arise in other conditions.
As explained by endocrinologist GKB No 2 Daria Kirova, one of the available methods of prevention is to use iodized salt instead of ordinary salt. The doctor recommends salting the dishes near the end of cooking or before serving.
The diet can also include sea fish, squid, shrimp, seaweed and dairy products. Iodized salt is advised to store in a dry dark place, in a closed container.
The health of pregnant women and children requires special attention: iodine deficiency can affect the development of the child. When planning pregnancy, the need for iodine and dosage of drugs should be discussed with a doctor.
If the weakness is accompanied by swelling, weight gain, a lump in the throat or heart palpitations, experts advise to make an appointment with a therapist or endocrinologist. For examination, the doctor may prescribe an ultrasound of the thyroid gland and tests for hormones. Independently take iodine-containing drugs in GKB No. 2 is not recommended.
