A group of four plaintiffs sued the Northern District of California for American companies Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, SpaceXAI. The companies were accused of conspiring to slow the development of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Politico.
The petitioners allege that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodej’s call for “industry-wide coordination” to slow AI development, joined by executives from OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google, amounts to an illegal business agreement between competitors under U.S. antitrust law.
One of the plaintiffs’ lawyers, Nick Rowley, explained that any “private self-serving agreements” between the companies in the field of AI could lead to its “exit from human control.” “The rule of law must be established transparently and lawfully by our government with accountability to the public.” He said humanity "deserves ironclad guarantees" against such threats.
On September 9, Jacob Coxon, a leading specialist in training AI models, resigned from Anthropic (Claude developer). He stated that due to competition, AI companies are “flying straight to self-improving superintelligence and playing with our lives.” Later, the call to slow down the development of AI was joined by the heads of Anthropic Dario Amodei, SpaceX Elon Musk and OpenAI Sam Altman. US President Donald Trump, however, has rejected the idea for fear of ceding supremacy to China.
